Founded in 1965, the Cheyenne River Housing Authority (CRHA) currently provides low income housing to over 650 families. The largest landlord on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, CRHA serves a primarily Native American population in communities throughout the Reservation. Our dedicated staff remains steadfast in its effort to gauge existing needs and provide meaningful opportunities for our families, in addition to expanding the availability of quality housing.

- Reduce costs and achieve greater cost effectiveness in Federal expenditures;
- Give incentives to families with children where the head of household is working, is seeking work, or is preparing for work by participating in job training, educational programs, or programs that assist people to obtain employment and become economically self-sufficient; and
- Increase housing choices for low income families.
- At CRHA, we consistently leverage resources by working with and through experienced non-profit service providers and other local tribal government agencies to deliver access to health, education and social services that benefit our residents and our neighborhoods. We are grateful to our partners for their commitment and work to create thriving communities with real opportunities for the residents we serve.

The North Star Senior Housing Project is a new construction project for eight one-bedroom single dwelling units. The Project will be built on Block 20 in the Badger Park Subdivision in the community of Eagle Butte. The target population is very low and low-income senior and disabled households.
Our reservation population is experiencing an increase in our senior and disabled population (60 years and older) and their housing needs require a smaller unit. The North Star Project consist of one-bedroom units to respond to our one bedroom waiting list. Most of our applicants have household income limited to social security supplemental source. We have a growing number of aging homeless individuals many are experiencing chronic health problems or have been victims of physical violence and are now needing a stable home environment.

- Household Composition cannot exceed 2 adults and 2 children
- No prior obligations to CRHA or other housing entities.

- Units will be periodically DRUG tested.
- Must be able to pass criminal background and credit check.
- Tenant must pay monthly rent and be responsible for 100% of monthly utilities. No utility checks will be issued for these units because they are NAHASDA unsubsidized units.
- Must submit a completed Rental Housing Application and attach required supporting documentation (tribal identification, social security cards, and picture identification).
- Security Deposit $500.00, plus 1st Month Rent $425; Pet Registration $50/dog, $25/cat, and Utility Deposits must be paid prior to move-in.

Coalition Launches Native American Veterans Homeownership Needs Assessment
We are excited to announce that the Coalition has partnered with Big Water Consulting and NeighborWorks to launch a statewide study to better understand the current housing conditions and needs to Native American veterans living on South Dakota's nine Indian reservations.
“The findings of this study will support the Coalition as we continue to increase access to homeownership resources for Native American veterans. It will also paint an accurate picture in our national policy discussions, ensuring federal programming aligns with the true needs of Native veterans,” says Cheryce Not Afraid, Director of the Coalition.
The first wave of the study begins today with surveys on the Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Pine Ridge, and Rosebud Reservations. Second and third waves will begin in December and next spring, respectively, and will cover the remaining reservations throughout the state. The survey will capture general demographic information as well as more specific information regarding the respondent’s current housing situation, housing preferences, and housing challenges.
“We are putting out a call to all Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Oglala, and Rosebud veterans to get in touch with us and answer the survey now. We’re also asking Flandreau, Lower Brule, Sisseton, Standing Rock, and Yankton vets to remain on stand-by, as their information will be critical in the coming months,” says Kimberly Long Soldier, the Coalition’s Homeownership Program Manager.

Rapid City, SD – Today, NDN Collective opened the application period for the 2024 Community Action Fund (CAF), which provides urgent funding to direct action and frontline organizing across Turtle Island (North America: US, Canada and Mexico) and related Island Nations, including Borikén/Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Over the past four years, CAF funds have supported efforts to resist pipelines, organizing for the release of political prisoner Leonard Peltier, protection of sacred sites, defense of lands and water, and legal defense strategies for those exercising the right to protest.
The Community Action Fund (CAF) furthers Indigenous Peoples’ mobilization strategies as it relates to the defense, development, and decolonization of peoples and the planet. This $1 million fund is available to support such efforts in 2024, with grants up to $40,000.
THE COMMUNITY ACTION FUND GRANT IS AVAILABLE ON AN ONGOING BASIS FROM JANUARY 11, 2024 TO OCTOBER 31, 2024 AT 5PM US CST OR UNTIL FUNDS ARE EXPENDED
